- What does this tool check – and what doesn’t it check?
- It verifies length, BBAN structure (character types and positions), and checksum (MOD-97). It does not confirm whether an account exists or who it belongs to. Banks in the SEPA area are required to verify the payee name automatically since October 2025 (Verification of Payee, EU Regulation 2024/886); always confirm bank details directly with the recipient.
- What is the BIC – and is it still required for SEPA transfers?
- The BIC (Business Identifier Code, ISO 9362) uniquely identifies a bank internationally. Within the SEPA area, banks have been required to resolve the BIC themselves since 2016; the IBAN alone is sufficient for domestic and cross-border transfers (SEPA Regulation 260/2012). Outside SEPA, the BIC is still required.
- Where can I find my IBAN?
- On your bank statement, in your online banking under “Account details”, or on the back of your debit card. Most banking apps show the IBAN on the home screen.
- How long is an IBAN?
- Between 15 characters (Norway) and 34 characters (Seychelles). A German IBAN is always 22 characters: country code (DE), 2 check digits, an 8-digit bank code, and a 10-digit account number.
- What does “?” mean – how do I use wildcard completion?
- If you can’t make out one or two characters, type “?” for each unknown position (max 2). The checker will list all formally valid IBAN candidates.
- Is it safe to enter my IBAN here?
- Yes. Your IBAN is processed exclusively in your browser – it is never sent to any server, never stored, and never included in analytics events.
